Sponsorship to obtain permanent residency of Canada:

A Canadian Citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their partner/spouse, dependent children, and some relatives to become permanent resident of Canada.

To be eligible as sponsor, you must be:

  • at least 18 years old
  • able to support sponsored person/persons financially
  • able to afford to support family members without government funds and assistance

  • If the sponsor lives outside of Quebec under the sponsorship of a spouse or partner, the sponsor must take a responsibility for supporting his/her partner for a duration which is called a commitment.

Your spouse must be at least 18 years old, and they must have been legally married to you as sponsor. Canada does not recognized proxy, over the phone and online marriages.

    Dependent children Sponsorship:

    You can sponsor your own dependent children or your spouse/partner children who are outside of Canada if:

    • They are under 21 years old and
    • They are single

    You can also sponsor your older children (22 years old or older) if:

    • They are still financially dependent on you as a parent
    • Due to their mental or physical condition, they cannot support themselves.

    Sponsor (parents) requirement for children sponsorship:

    • The sponsor must be 18 years old and citizen or permanent resident of Canada
    • Commit to financially support dependent child for 10 years or until age of 25
    • If the sponsor lives in the Quebec, she/he must make an additional commitment

    Who is not eligible for sponsorship?

    • People who owe money to the government
    • People who are in prison or have a wanted sentence issued against them
    • People who have committed a serious crime against one of their first-degree relatives
    • People who received government grants and are not physically disabled

    Who else can be sponsored?

    As a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor your sister, brother, niece, nephew and orphan grandchildren only if:

    • They are single with no relationship
    • Their parents are deceased
    • You have a relative (blood) relationship or has taken responsibility for their support

    Other reasons why you may not be able to sponsor relatives are:

    • If you already made a commitment and have not fulfilled it, you will not be able to sponsor a new person.
    • If the court has ruled that you did not provide child support, you may not be able to sponsor a new person
    • You have committed a crime that is related to relatives or sexuality and can lead to you are not able to someone else depending on the type of crime.
    • If you have applied for a grant from the government for reasons other than disability. (The meaning of living allowance here is welfare and government loans and scholarship will not be a problem. This means that if you receive a government grant other than welfare, it will not cause a problem with the sponsorship file)
    • You may also not be able to sponsor another person if you have previously sponsored someone and they have applied to the government for financial assistance after arriving in Canada also in this case, the government will demand all the grants given to the sponsored person from the sponsor (committed) person.

    Sponsorship application processing time:

    Most sponsorship applications finalize in almost 12 months. However, the processing time of sponsorship applications may be prolonged in some cases.

    If the officer reviewing your application, invites you to an interview or request for additional documents/information, the application’s processing time will be increased.

    The applicant must also provide medical examination and biometrics (fingerprint and photography) before the application is finalized.
