Things to know before you apply for a study permit

As a foreign national you need to apply for a study permit to be able to study in one of the designated learning institutions in Canada.

To obtain a study permit you need to gather all the required documents before you submit your application. Here are some of the most important documents:

• Letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution
• Proof of English/ French language proficiency
• Proof of previous educational documents (if applicable)
• Proof of sufficient financial stability to cover tuition fee and living expenses in Canada.

There are other supporting documents which you can submit with your study permit application. Some of them are listed below:

• Evidence of sources of income to proof you can afford to study in Canada
• Evidence of your personal, financial, and any other ties to your country of residence
• Evidence of reasons why you want to study in Canada

Scholarship requirements and types:

1. Scholarship: refers to financial support which is granted to student from universities and training centers and there is no need to repay the amount.
2. Loan: it is a kind of financial support which is paid to university from a bank or a private facility and is used for tuition and fees. Applicant will need a guarantor who is residing in located country for obtaining this type of loan.
3. Research assistant: applicant helps professors in writing articles and conducting research as an assistant.
4. Fellowship: Research position for a certain duration mostly with a salary.

Study permit processing time and validity:

Application processing time depends on the time and the country you apply from.

The application processing fee for study permit is $150 CAD. Residents of most countries need to provide biometric as part of their application. The biometric fee is $85 CAD.

Canadian Study permit is valid for the duration of your study or until the expiry date of your passport.

Reasons of study permit refusal:

Some of the most common reasons for study permit refusals are the followings:

1. No family ties to Canada and country of residence.
2. No stable employment/ work experience history in country of residence
3. No or limited travel history
4. No sufficient proof of financial support
5. Not enough motivation and sufficient reasons to continue education in Canada
6. And many other grounds that can be different in each application.

After you obtain study permit in Canada

International students who study in Canada can work up to 20 hours per week during their studies. Upon graduation, most of these international students are eligible to apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit visa and work full-time in Canada.

If the student is married or has partner, their spouse/ partner is eligible to apply for an open work permit and work full-time in Canada during the time they have study permit and post-graduation work permit

PGWP is issued based on the length of the study program for a minimum of 8 months to a maximum of 3 years.

As an international student in Canada, you can apply for permanent residence in Canada during the time you study or work in Canada or after your graduation and obtaining Canadian work experience.
